Don’t miss our “Promised Land Trail,” one of several trails along the Discover Tennessee Trails & Byways Program, showcasing the state’s major sites, as well as its off-the-beaten-path attractions. The local trail begins in Nashville and follows Highway 70, where you can experience rich history, great food, shopping and more. It was said to have been a challenge for many of Tennessee’s first settlers to make their way from Northeast Tennessee, over the Cumberland Plateau and into Nashville. Tennessee is also a perfect touring ground for Civil War enthusiasts. In fact, more conflicts took place in our state than in any other state except Virginia. Tennessee’s significance in the War Between the States was due in large part to its critical river and railroad systems. Today you can follow in the footsteps of the “Blue and Gray” on battlegrounds large and small following Tennessee’s Civil War Trail.
