Sports Council – Q&A with Cumberland University Athletic Coaches

Join the Lebanon Wilson County Chamber of Commerce Sports Council Division for this month’s meeting, featuring a special Q&A session with athletic coaches from Cumberland University!
Hear firsthand from Ron Pavan, VP of CU Athletics, and a panel of CU coaches, as they share insights on their programs, upcoming seasons, and the role athletics plays in building community and leadership. This is a great opportunity to connect with local sports professionals, learn more about collegiate athletics, and engage in meaningful discussion about sports in Wilson County.

Meet the Coaches
Allen Balmer
Coach Balmer is Cumberland University’s new Head Baseball Coach. He spent the last 17 seasons at Lewis-Clark State College, helping guide the Warriors to consistent national championship contention and a remarkable 701–202–1 overall record during his tenure on staff. His 17-year run included three NAIA World Series titles and multiple national runner-up finishes.
Eric Evans II
Coach Evans enters his third year as the Head Coach of the men’s basketball team and his seventh year with the program after serving the previous four as an assistant coach. Evans started with Cumberland as a volunteer assistant coach in 2019-20 before being promoted to the full-time assistant coach in 2021 and then elevated to head coach in 2023.
Mark Vaughn
Coach Vaughn enters his second season as the Head Coach of the women’s basketball program in 2025-26 after spending five seasons at Bethel University in McKenzie, TN. Vaughn brings a wealth of experience being a part of the Mid-South Conference the last several seasons. He has a proven track record as a high-level recruiter and has brought that to Cumberland University.
Tim Mathis
Mathis is entering his eighth season as the Head Football Coach in 2025. Mathis entered this season with a 30-38 record. In the 2024 season, he was named the Mid-South Conference Coach of the Year after leading the Phoenix to a 7-3 record, the best record during his tenure at Cumberland.
