The Lebanon Wilson County Chamber of Commerce hosted City of Lebanon, TN – Government Mayor Rick Bell, on April 18, for the State of the City Address at Capitol Theatre. From the future developments of restaurants to the quality of life supported by our local hospitals & first responders, Mayor Bell painted a picture of a thriving city. With a recently lowered crime rate & positive growth as a top priority, it is evident that our city is headed in a great direction.
Mayor Bell extended his gratitude to our local business owners for their unwavering support of our economy. Their dedication underscores the importance of of nurturing our local businesses, which are the backbone of our community.
Bell told an anecdote about Earl Majors, a Castle Heights graduate, paired with a baseball from the City Museum, signed by Majors. Majors signed the baseball in 1965 after scoring the first homerun on our current field. What does a baseball have to do with the current state of the city? Mayor Bell discussed exciting plans to meet with City Council regarding a phase II of the sports complex, highlighting the need for expansion. With only one field currently serving 190 baseball/softball teams, the approval of a second phase is not only a want but a necessity.

April French, owner of The Oasis Healing Lounge and Hair Studio, hosted a Ribbon Cutting at her new hair studio. The ceremony was conducted by the Lebanon Wilson County Chamber of Commerce.
The Oasis was created to help people feel comfortable and confident within themselves. This is a place to help heal their personal insecurities and to find inner peace within the soul or just a place where you can go to be alone to escape everyday life for a while. Jamie Wallmark, a teacher at Jones Brummett Elementary, was awarded a grant through the Lebanon Wilson County Chamber of Commerceโs Business & Education Coalition. Chamber President & CEO Melanie Minter and Education Division Vice-Chair DeJeay Woods visited Wallmark to see the impact of her project on her students. With the funds received from her grant, Wallmark was able to purchase a set of decodable reader books for her students.
โStudents come to school each year on varying reading and phonics levels. Our job as teachers is to teach students to read and read fluently. This must be done before we can teach reading comprehension. This is a huge task when every student is on a different level when it comes to their reading skills. Every student deserves to learn how to read and to read fluently,โ Wallmark stated.
These decodable reader book sets consist of nine different stages of phonics instruction and sounds that include: short vowels, consonant blends, digraphs, long vowels, word-ending spellings, r-controlled vowels, vowel teams, diphthongs, and advanced spelling patterns. Each skill has multiple sets, and six books come with each skill. These books are based on the science of reading and seek to grow studentsโ reading skills by teaching the students how to decode words.
โThe science of reading is quickly becoming the way we teach students how to read. It is a research-based, effective way to teach students how to read by using phonemic awareness, phonics, decoding skills, and sounding out words based on spelling patterns,โ she said, โGone are the days of teaching students how to guess the words by using picture clues, guessing based on the first sound, and just memorizing words. Instead, researchers have discovered the importance of a scientific approach to reading in which students learn to read by learning the โsounds firstโ.โ

We stopped by to see our friend Cynthia at Sunshine Weaving and Fiber Arts! Sunshine Weaving is such a neat place here in Lebanon. They are a friendly fiber arts shop offering yarn and fiber for weaving, spinning, knitting, and felting. Just as we love supporting local businesses, so do they! Their Alpaca and wool is sourced from local farms. Sunshine Weaving offers a variety of classes teaching weaving, spinning, felting, and knitting.
